AsianFin-- Apple announced its partnership with ChatGPT creator OpenAI during its initial launch of artificial intelligence (AI) features on its devices on Monday.

While the AI features are expected to provide a significant boost, it could pose privacy challenges for Apple, as it aligns with a company and technology that have faced public criticism for using user inputs in ChatGPT's data set.

The set of tools powered by systems that incorporate GPT-4o was named "Apple Intelligence," according to an announcement made during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday.

These include personalized Genmoji–AI-generated emojis, and an enhanced Siri capable of answering questions about your schedule, emails, and the arrival time of a loved one's flight.

“All of this goes beyond artificial intelligence, it’s personal intelligence, and it is the next big step for Apple,” CEO Tim Cook said.

“Apple Intelligence” puts AI models “right at the core of your iPhone, iPad and Mac” and “protects your privacy at every step,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering.

The upgrades will be available for free in Apple’s iOS 18 operating system, due for release later this year, but the full suite of features will only work on more recent models of the iPhone, iPad and Macbook.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a social media post that he was “very happy” to be partnering with Apple to integrate ChatGPT into its products.

But billionaire Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of OpenAI rival xAI and Tesla, blasted the partnership, calling the software integration between the two companies "an unacceptable security violation," and noted Apple has "no clue what’s actually going on."

Apple, which has long refrained from using the term "artificial intelligence," is facing increasing pressure to demonstrate that it is staying competitive with rivals such as Microsoft and Google in the race to develop AI technologies.

A push into AI could drive iPhone sales and services growth for years, as users are taking longer to upgrade their devices and an uncertain economic climate, especially in China, impacts consumer behavior. The company also faces regulatory scrutiny in Washington and was recently surpassed by chipmaker Nvidia as the second-largest public company in the U.S.

Apple has been impressed with the generative AI tools available but aims to make them more personal while prioritizing privacy.

“As we integrate these incredible new capabilities, we want to ensure they reflect the core principles of our products. They need to be powerful enough to assist with what matters most to you,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook during the keynote. “They must be intuitive and easy to use, deeply integrated into your product experiences.”

“Most importantly, they must understand you and be grounded in your personal context, including your routine, relationships, communications, and more. And, of course, they must be built with privacy from the ground up,” he added.

Cook began the iOS 18 portion by showcasing new controls and personalization features, including a revamped icon look in Dark Mode, a new tint color that complements wallpaper, and a redesigned control center accessible from the lock screen, allowing users to swap the flashlight icon for other tools.

Additionally, users can now “hide” apps, which will only appear in a locked, hidden folder. The company said it will soon let people send texts via satellite, even if they don’t have a cell or WiFi connection.

The company also announced software updates for other products, including the Mac, AirPods, and Apple Watch.

Apple unveiled its latest MacOS software, named Sequoia, featuring several new productivity enhancements. For example, phone mirroring will bring iPhone alerts directly to the laptop that show up directly next to Mac notifications.

MacOS will also include a feature for arranging open windows in specific areas on the screen, such as side by side, a concept made popular by Microsoft Windows.

In terms of video conferencing, a new presenter preview will let users see what they are going to share before sharing it. Additionally, Apple is adding background replacement options for calls, enabling users to hide any clutter behind them.

For AirPods, users will be able to answer or decline calls with just a nod or shake of their head. Moreover, the Apple Watch will now have new vital sign tracking capabilities that can alert users when they might be getting sick, based on indicators like body temperature and heart rate.

On the back of advanced machine learning algorithms, Vision OS 2 promises to offer more rich experiences for users, such as a wider display for work stations, new hand gestures that let a user check battery life or open up the home screen, and get deeper inside the photos in the user’s library.
